The experience
You start by choosing your wood (each type has its own color and grain), then the instructor walks you through the tools and the steps ahead. From there you shape the wood with planes, sand the surface until it's smooth, and finish with natural oil to bring out the color and protect the grain. The whole sequence takes about an hour, and the chopsticks you make are yours to carry home as a souvenir that actually works.
Chopsticks have been part of Japanese life for more than 2,000 years, and in Japan they're often given as gifts because they symbolize connection between people. This class gives you a direct way into that tradition, not by learning history, but by making something with your hands using the same materials and methods. Wood chips and dust will fly around, so aprons are provided and you'll want to wear clothes that can get messy.
The class runs in Sapporo with public transportation nearby, so you can reach it easily without a car. Groups stay small, capped at eight people, which means the instructor can watch your work and the space doesn't feel crowded.
