The experience
Rocklands Bird Sanctuary sits in the hills of Anchovy, roughly 20 minutes from Montego Bay, and operates as a hands-on experience rather than a viewing tour. You'll spend time feeding birds directly (hummingbirds, parrots and other species) some endemic to Jamaica and others that have made the island their home. The centerpiece is the hummingbird encounter: you hold a bottle of their preferred drink, wait for them to perch on your outstretched finger, and feed them while they hover inches from your face.
After the bird feeding, your guide takes you on a walk through the garden to learn about the different trees and herbs growing there. The whole experience runs 45 minutes to over an hour depending on how long you linger with the birds and how many questions you ask. An air-conditioned minivan picks you up from your hotel and brings you back when it's done, so you don't arrange your own transport.
The tour works best in good weather: rain cancels the day, though you'll be offered a different date or a full refund. Children must have an adult with them, and the minimum drinking age for the hummingbird experience is 18. Specialized infant seats are available if you're traveling with very young children.
