The Experience

I still have red dust on my shoes from Jamwest — it gets everywhere, but honestly, that’s half the fun. The first thing I noticed was the sound: engines humming while birds called out from somewhere in the mangroves. Our guide, Andre, handed me a helmet and goggles and grinned like he knew what was coming (he did). He said something about “don’t worry if you stall out” — which I did, right away, in front of everyone. Nobody cared. The practice laps felt weird at first but then it just clicked; suddenly I was bouncing over roots and splashing through muddy puddles like I’d been doing this forever.

The air smelled sharp — salt from the sea mixed with something green and earthy as we rode through the forest. Sometimes the trail would open up and you’d catch a glimpse of the Caribbean Sea way out past the palms. Andre pointed out some goats near Salmon Point fishing village (they barely looked up) before we rolled onto this stretch of golden sand that felt almost too quiet for how loud our ATVs had been. I tried to brush mud off my face but gave up — nobody stays clean here anyway.

Ziplining surprised me more than I thought it would. You climb these wooden steps that creak under your shoes, clip in, and then there’s just wind and shouting and all this green rushing by underneath. At one point you can see Negril’s speedway in the distance — looks tiny from up there — and someone behind me yelled “ya mon!” so loud I started laughing mid-flight. It’s fast but not scary after the first go; actually kind of peaceful if you let yourself look down for a second.

I didn’t expect to feel so loose by the end — maybe it’s something about riding with strangers who stop being strangers after you’ve all wiped out together once or twice. On the drive back to my hotel (pickup included, thank God), my arms were tired but my head felt light in a way that stuck around for days.
