The Experience

I’ll be honest, I was a little nervous about leaving Montego Bay for the day — not because of the distance (it’s about two hours each way), but just that feeling you get before something new. Our driver, Andre, met us right at the hotel entrance and immediately put us at ease. He asked if we’d packed water shoes (we hadn’t — he had extras in the van). The air-conditioning was a relief after the sticky morning outside. We set off with reggae on low and Andre pointing out random things: a goat tied under a mango tree, school kids waving in uniforms, and then Christopher Columbus Park — which I’d never even heard of until that moment.

The road wound through small towns and past this bauxite mining plant — Andre called it “Jamaica’s second wallet.” There was this weird metallic smell in the air near there; not bad, just different. By the time we reached Blue Hole, clouds had started to gather but it didn’t matter — actually made everything look more green. Changing into swimsuits in those tiny bathrooms felt like an awkward dance (I dropped my towel twice), but soon we were following our guide down to Secret Falls. The water was cold enough to make me gasp but so clear you could see every pebble. At one point our guide showed us how to jump from a ledge — I hesitated forever while everyone cheered. Still can’t believe I did it.

Afterwards, hair dripping everywhere, we sat on benches while Andre sorted out lunch options (“You trust me? Go jerk chicken,” he grinned). There were stalls with carved wood turtles and bottles of hot sauce lined up like soldiers; I bought one mostly for the label art. On the drive back, everyone got quiet for a while — tired but happy. The windows fogged up from all our wet clothes and someone started humming along to Bob Marley on the radio. That whole stretch back toward Montego Bay felt sort of dreamy; I keep thinking about that jump into the water, how alive it made me feel.
