The experience
This tour moves through different neighborhoods (upper class, middle and lower class), so you see how Montego Bay actually lives, not just the tourist strip. The guide walks you through Jamaica's history from 1492 to the present, stopping at Sam Sharpe Square to learn about one of the country's national heroes and see his shrine. You'll photograph the landmarks and get the real story behind each one.
The St. James Parish Church, built between 1775 and 1782, is one of the oldest in Montego Bay and still holds services today. Its white limestone walls and Greek cross design survived the 1951 earthquake with only minor repairs. The National Museum Jamaica houses over 17,000 artifacts (historic, ethnographic and archaeological pieces) that trace Jamaica's material culture from prehistoric times through today. The Cage, a bold stone structure from 1806, originally held runaway slaves and other people deemed vagrants. The bell installed in 1811 was rung at 2 and 3 p.m. to warn enslaved people to leave town.
The tour ends with food: jerk chicken, jerk pork, oxtail and rice with peas prepared the way locals eat it, plus seasonal Jamaican fruits. You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with a guide who speaks English and knows the city's history firsthand. The whole experience runs about three hours.
