A night boat tour of the Luminous Lagoon near Montego Bay where you ride out to waters lit by harmless phosphorescent phytoplankton, then jump in to swim among the glow. Private transportation and hotel pickup are included, and a live English-speaking guide leads the outing. Swimming is optional.

The experience

The boat leaves from your hotel in Montego Bay or from Falmouth/Trelawny (depending on your pickup option) and heads out onto the Luminous Lagoon after dark. The water itself is the attraction: millions of harmless phytoplankton emit light when disturbed, so every ripple and movement glows. You'll see the effect from the glass-bottom boat first, watching the illuminated water beneath you, then you have the choice to jump in and swim through it yourself: the glow clings to your body and your hands as you move through the water, which is what makes the photos work.

An air-conditioned vehicle picks you up from your hotel and brings you back after the tour ends. The guide speaks English and is with you throughout. Swimming is entirely optional, so if you'd rather stay dry and watch from the boat, that's fine. Infants can sit on an adult's lap, and specialized infant seats are available if you need one.

What exactly makes the water glow in the Luminous Lagoon?

Harmless phosphorescent phytoplankton in the water emit light when they're disturbed by movement. The glow is brightest at night and most visible when you're in the water or when the boat moves through it.

Can I actually swim in the Luminous Lagoon, or just look at it from the boat?

You can do both. The glass-bottom boat lets you see the glowing water from above, and then you have the option to jump in and swim among the phytoplankton. Swimming is optional, so you can stay on the boat if you prefer.
