Green Grotto Caves Tour: Stalactites & Underground Pools
Descend into Jamaica's underworld: stalactites, chambers and water so clear you can see through it
A guided tour of Green Grotto Caves from Ocho Rios with hotel or cruise port pickup and drop-off, plus bottled water and a driver-guide in English or Spanish. You'll walk through interconnected caverns and passages down to the cave's innermost grotto, passing majestic stalactites and stalagmites and other dripstone formations, then stop at the Wishing Well on the way out. The caves sheltered Jamaica's first inhabitants, runaway slaves in the 18th century, and Spanish forces during the 1655 takeover.

The experience
The caves sit on 25.9 hectares of the North Coast between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay, and the drive there is part of the tour. You'll travel along Jamaica's coastline in a fully air-conditioned vehicle with a knowledgeable guide and driver. The whole outing runs about four hours from pickup at your hotel or cruise port to drop-off, with complimentary water provided throughout. Your guide will narrate the journey and handle the logistics so you focus on what's ahead.
Once you arrive, you'll pay the entrance fee (US$20 for adults, US$10 for children) and meet your guide for the cave walk itself. In under an hour, you'll move through a maze of sturdy stalactites and stalagmites and other exquisite dripstone formations, then continue through interconnected passageways and chambers down to 37 metres below the surface. The innermost cavern opens onto the grotto: a pool of water so translucent it stops most visitors mid-step. On your way back out, you'll stop at the Wishing Well and throw a coin for whatever you're hoping for.
The caves have held different purposes across centuries: shelter for the Tainos, Jamaica's first inhabitants; a haven for runaway slaves in the 1700s; a hideout during the Spanish-English conflict of 1655; an arms-smuggling route between the World Wars; and later, a rum storehouse. Walking through them, you're moving through layers of the island's actual history, not a recreation of it. After the cave tour, you'll have time to shop and grab lunch before heading back to your hotel or port: meals aren't included, so you'll choose where and what to eat.
