The experience
The tour starts with hotel or port pickup in Ocho Rios and a drive to Green Grotto Caves, the cave system that has drawn visitors since the 18th century. Once inside, the guide walks you through the chambers where you'll see Taino pottery fragments and stone tools left by the original inhabitants who sheltered in these caves. The Spanish hid here during the 1655 British invasion, and an underground tunnel connects the caves to the sand at Runaway Bay. The route they believed would let them escape the island and reach Cuba. Runaway slaves later used the same caves to hide from their former masters.
The caves also hold World War 2 history: the Jamaican Government stored rum barrels here for safekeeping during the war, and those chambers are part of what you'll see. The guide explains the layers of occupation and survival that shaped the site. Transport back to your hotel or port concludes the tour.
