The experience

How do you fit two major waterfalls into one day from a cruise port or Montego Bay hotel? A private guide and minivan handle the logistics, leaving you to move between the two sites without arranging transport or timing the return to the ship yourself. The tour runs about ten hours door-to-door, which means you leave early and get back with time to spare before evening.

Blue Hole is the first stop: a natural limestone formation with multiple pools, a rope swing, cliff-jumping spots and caves to explore. A short ten-minute hike leads to Secret Falls. The site has bathrooms, changing rooms and lockers available, plus lifejackets you can rent if you want one. You swim, jump and swing at your own pace. There's no forced itinerary once you arrive. After Blue Hole, the minivan takes you to Dunn's River Falls, the famous terraced waterfall in the Jamaican jungle. The climb is 600 feet up a giant staircase of water and stone. If it gets too steep, you can walk along a path beside the falls instead. A guide helps you navigate the pools and the climb. The site gets crowded with cruise passengers, so an early arrival means fewer people in the water when you get there.

Lunch is not included in the tour price, though your guide can direct you to Scotchies, a casual spot nearby serving traditional Jamaican food. Bring water shoes for Dunn's River. They're required for the climb and make the rocks less slippery. The tour is not suitable for pregnant travelers, anyone with spinal injuries or cardiovascular concerns, or those without at least moderate fitness. The cliff jumps and the 600-foot climb demand it.
