Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Beech Forest and Elcito Village
- Walk inside centuries-old beech forest
- Observe the oldest beech tree in Marche
- Enjoy panoramic views from rocky lookout
- Visit the Borgo di Elcito village
The experience
Six to seven hours of walking takes you into a beech forest where trees stand over 500 years old, their trunks thick and their canopy dense enough to change the light. You'll pass the king of Canfaito, the oldest beech in all of Marche, and walk surrounded by the same woodland that has held this landscape for centuries. Between October and November the leaves turn warm gold and amber, turning the forest into the kind of place where photographs stop time. From June through September, herds of grazing cows move through the clearings: a detail that anchors the walk to the working life of the region.
The route climbs to a rocky lookout point that opens onto the Esino valley, a panorama that stretches across the landscape below. From there you retrace the forest path back toward Elcito, arriving at Borgo di Elcito: a small village built on the slope where each corner frames a view toward the valley. The village has the quality of a place where daily life has moved slowly. Stone buildings, narrow passages, and sight lines that have stayed the same for generations. You'll have time to walk through it with your guide before the tour ends.
Your guide speaks Italian and knows the reserve and the village. The tour includes snacks and business insurance. The walk is steady and long, suitable for all fitness levels, but not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or those who are pregnant. Children under six are not a good fit for the duration and terrain.
