The experience
The tour begins in Piazza Brà, Verona's main square, and moves quickly into the Roman layers of the city. You walk past the Verona Arena, the ancient amphitheater that once held gladiator contests, then thread through Vicolo del Guasto, a narrow alleyway lined with historic buildings where the crowds thin out. Porta Borsari, an ancient Roman gate, marks the shift from one era to the next, and from there you head toward Riva San Lorenzo for a view over the Adige River before reaching the Church of San Giovanni in Foro.
The route then opens into Piazza delle Erbe, the city's lively market square where vendors still sell produce and local goods, and continues to Piazza dei Signori, surrounded by elegant palaces. You visit the Basilica di Santa Anastasia, a Gothic structure with an ornate interior, and cross Ponte Pietra, the ancient bridge offering views downriver. The tour passes Casa di Romeo, the house traditionally linked to Shakespeare's lovers, and concludes at the Arche Scaligere, the Gothic funerary monuments of the Scaligeri family who ruled medieval Verona.
You choose between a small group tour or a private one, and the guide speaks English, Spanish, French, Italian, or German. Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Spanish, French and Italian.
What is the Verona Arena and why does the tour start near it?
The Verona Arena is an ancient Roman amphitheater that once hosted gladiator contests and performances, now a symbol of the city's cultural heritage. The tour begins in Piazza Brà, the square where the Arena stands, to ground you in Verona's Roman past before moving through the medieval and Renaissance layers of the city.
Does the tour go inside the churches and monuments, or just past them?
This is a city tour, not a tour inside the monuments. You walk past and around the sites (the Basilica di Santa Anastasia, Casa di Romeo, the Arche Scaligere), and see them from the outside. Entry to any of these is separate and at your own cost, though the operator can help you book tickets.
What is Piazza delle Erbe like when you visit?
Piazza delle Erbe is Verona's lively market square, lined with colorful stalls selling fresh produce and local goods. It remains an active marketplace and a gathering point in the city center, so you experience it as locals do rather than as a museum piece.
Can I book this tour for just two people, or do I need a larger group?
A minimum of two participants is required for the small group option. You can also book a private tour for any size group, which gives you the guide's full attention and the flexibility to adjust the pace or focus.
How much walking is involved, and is it suitable for people with mobility concerns?
The tour covers Verona's historic center on foot over two hours, moving between squares and along riverside promenades. All areas and surfaces are wheelchair accessible, and the tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller.
