Umbria Natural Dyeing Workshop: Traditional Fabric Techniques

A 2-hour natural dyeing workshop in the Castiglione del Lago area where you learn to dye fabric using traditional techniques with flowers, leaves and seeds, guided by an expert craftsman. The workshop includes analysis of your finished pieces and a refreshing drink in the garden afterward. The guide speaks English, Portuguese or Italian, and children are welcome from age 6.

The experience

You arrive at the workshop and the craftsman shows you how natural dyes are produced from the materials around you. The process itself is what makes the experience interesting. You'll handle the flowers, leaves and seeds, see how they transform into color, and apply the techniques to your own fabric. This is not observation. You're working with your hands the whole time, learning the steps that turn raw plant material into dye and then into the patterns on cloth.

After you've finished dyeing, you and the craftsman analyze the results together: what worked, what the different techniques produced, why the colors came out as they did. Then you move to the garden with a cold drink, and if the craftsman's pets are around, they're part of the afternoon too. You leave with the fabric you made.
