The experience
You arrive in Assisi with a free afternoon or a morning to spare, and instead of another church or museum, you head into the hills to hunt for truffles: the rare underground fungi that command prices as high as the history of the town itself. A guide meets you and takes you out into the countryside, where the walk follows forest paths, open fields, and sometimes riverbanks, depending on the season and which truffle you're searching for. Summer means the hunt for black scorzone truffles in the woods and open ground. Autumn shifts to the white truffle, rarer and more prized, which sends you deeper into wooded terrain and sometimes across streams.
The two dogs, Lord and Lea, do the actual finding. They're trained to catch the scent and dig at the spot where a truffle grows underground. Your job is to watch them work, then kneel down and unearth the truffle yourself with your hands, uncovering it from the soil. The guide walks alongside, explaining why each terrain grows different truffles, how to tell them apart, and why the dogs search the way they do. You'll see two distinct search methods play out over the two hours, and by the end you'll understand why truffles command such reverence and such prices. The route itself adjusts to your group. If children are along or anyone prefers an easier walk, the guide shapes the terrain and distance to fit.
After the hunt ends, you're offered a small seasonal snack with coffee, water, tea and some light refreshments. Pickup is included in the booking, and the guide speaks English or Italian.

What happens if the dogs don't find any truffles?
The dogs are trained to search and locate truffles in the terrain where they grow. The guide knows the land and the season, and will take you to areas where truffles are present, but the hunt itself is the experience: finding them is the reward.
