The experience
You meet your guide on Tiber Island, the only urban island in the Tiber river, and walk into the medieval heart of Trastevere from there. The tour moves through the district's oldest corners: past the Church of Santa Cecilia and into one of Rome's oldest bakeries for your first taste. The guide shows you where local craftsmen and traders still work unchanged by time: a cold cuts store where you taste salami and cheese cured in the Italian tradition, then the famous supplì, a deep-fried rice ball filled with cheese, tomato, mozzarella and egg. You'll also stop at one of the district's oldest and best pizza shops.
The route takes you through off-the-beaten paths toward Piazza Trilussa and the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, where the tasting continues with both savory and sweet stops. Before the final gelato, you walk onto Sistus Bridge (the 16th-century span named after the pope who commissioned its restoration), and stand in front of St. Peter's dome rising in the background. The group stays under 14 people, so the pace feels like wandering with friends rather than following a crowd.
