The experience

Eight hours means you cover real ground without rushing. Your private driver meets you at your Messina hotel or the cruise port and takes the highway south to Castelmola, a medieval hilltop village 450 meters up, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. From there the views open to Mount Etna (at 3,330 meters, Europe's highest volcano), and the Giardini-Naxos bay stretching below. The village itself is small enough to walk, and the winding road down takes ten minutes.

Taormina is the day's centerpiece. Your guide leads you through the Greek Theatre of Taormina, a superbly preserved ancient amphitheater with a capacity over 4,000 and views that frame Etna in the distance. You walk Corso Umberto I, the main pedestrian street running 800 meters through the heart of the old town, lined with shops and cafes. Piazza IX Aprile gives you panoramic views of the coast, and you see Piazza Duomo and the Corvaja Palace, which now houses the Taormina Museum of Art and Archaeology.

On the return to Messina, the tour ends at the cathedral with its astronomical clock, the biggest in the world, and a viewpoint from one of the oldest fortresses in the city, where you can photograph the strait and port. Your driver brings you back to your starting point by late afternoon.
