Step-by-step itinerary
Sunset boat tour and aperitif
- Depart from Palinuro port pier
- Enter the Blue Grotto cave
- Moor at Ficocella bay
- Enjoy fish aperitif and swim
The experience
You board at the port of Palinuro, known for water so clear the boat seems to float on air. The route heads straight to the Blue Grotto, where an underwater tunnel floods the cave with light and turns the water an intense blue and turquoise. You stay long enough to take in the effect (the guide explains what you're seeing), then the boat motors toward the bay of Ficocella, where it drops anchor as the light starts to change.
This is when the aperitif begins. The crew sets out fresh fish prepared in the local style, along with prosecco, soft drinks and bottled water. You can stay on deck and watch the sky color, or slip into the bay for a swim in water calm enough that you can float and look back at the town. As the first stars come out, Palinuro's lights start to reflect on the sea. The whole stop is built around this moment: the food, the timing, the anchor point chosen so the town sits behind you and the sun drops in front.
If you don't eat fish or follow a vegan diet, contact the operator before you book so they can prepare something else. The tour runs at either 6:30 PM or 6:00 PM depending on the option you choose. Both times aim to catch the same window of light. Bring a towel if you plan to swim, and wear shoes you don't mind getting wet for the boat boarding.

Is this one for you?The two-hour window and the fixed sunset timing mean you can fit this into an afternoon or evening that's otherwise free, and the aperitif on board means you don't need to plan dinner separately. If you want to swim as part of the experience, the calm bay of Ficocella is where that happens. If you'd rather stay dry, you can stay on deck with the food and the view.
