The Experience

Ever wondered what sulfur really smells like? I didn’t, until our boat drifted into Cala Fetente along the Costa del Mito. The morning started at Palinuro’s little port — half-open to the sea, so the water looked impossibly clear. Our guide, Antonio, waved us aboard with that kind of easy Cilento warmth. He pointed out the old Bourbon watchtowers dotting the cliffs as we motored out. The breeze had that salty-sticky feel on my skin — not sure if it was sunscreen or just the air here.

We stopped by these wild sea caves — Blue Grotto first, then Sulphurous and Bone Grotto (the names alone made me curious). I tried asking about the old Club Med ruins nearby in my broken Italian; got a long answer I only half understood but everyone laughed when I tried “Buon Dormire” with my accent.

I still think about that moment floating in Cilento’s light, feeling like time slowed down for once.
