The boat leaves Tropea at 3:30pm, and you're on the water for about two hours before the port at Scari comes into view. Stromboli sits low on the horizon at first, then grows. You get roughly 45 minutes to three hours on the island itself — the exact window shifts with the season and daylight — enough to walk into the village of San Vincenzo, grab a coffee or a meal at one of the restaurants along the main street, or swim in the deep water if you brought a suit. The crew speaks Italian, English and German, so you're not guessing at what's happening.

At 7:30pm the boat casts off again, and this is where the evening changes. You motor around the volcano's base in the dark, heading toward the Sciara del Fuoco — the lava field on Stromboli's flank that faces the sea. The boat holds position at a safe distance for about 30 minutes while the volcano does what it does: the lava glows orange and red against the black rock and black water, and the fire reflects on the surface. The €5 disembarkation fee for the municipality of Lipari goes to the port and is paid in cash before you board. Bring it in small bills.
