The Experience
I didn’t expect to laugh so much with strangers on a boat off Tropea. Maybe it was the way our skipper, Antonio, kept pointing out cliffs and telling stories about old Roman ports and sea caves—sometimes he’d pause mid-sentence just to let us listen to the water slap against the hull. There were only six of us squeezed onto the cushioned benches, salt sticking to our skin already before we even jumped in. The air smelled like wild fennel and sunscreen, which I guess is Calabria in June.
The Coast of the Gods looks different from the water—greener somehow, with these jagged rocks that drop straight into turquoise patches. We stopped at Praja di Fuoco first; Antonio handed out masks and fins (I’m not great at snorkeling but no one seemed to care). The silence underwater felt thick except for my own bubbles. Someone spotted a silvery fish darting by and tried to shout through their snorkel—didn’t work, but we all got it. Later, near Riaci canyon, I tried saying “Cave of the Skeleton” in Italian; Antonio laughed and corrected me but I still can’t pronounce it right.
There was a moment at Capo Vaticano when everyone just went quiet—the cliffs looked almost white in the midday sun, and you could hear nothing but distant gulls. It’s funny how being with people you barely know can feel comfortable when you’re all watching something beautiful together. Before heading back to Tropea’s port, Antonio passed around little plates with spicy ‘nduja on bread and poured local wine into plastic cups. I’m not sure if it was the sea air or just hunger from swimming, but everything tasted sharper than usual. I still think about that view from the bow sometimes—how open it all felt.
What’s included
Your half-day includes pickup from Tropea port by your skipper Antonio (or another local), use of comfortable snorkeling gear for each swim stop, soft drinks throughout the ride, plus a light Calabrian aperitif—local wine served with typical snacks—before returning to shore in Tropea.
