From there, the castle unfolds as a building that has been almost everything: Emperor Hadrian's tomb, a papal fortress, a state treasury, a prison, a place of execution. The route takes you through rooms filled with paintings and statues, past the emperor's burial place, into the courtyard where public executions once happened, and through the Papal Apartments where popes actually lived and worked.
The treasure room sits near the top of the castle, and from there you step out onto the terrace. This is where the view opens up: the Tiber below, the city spreading in all directions, the dome of St. Peter's in the distance. Your guide is fluent in English and walks you through the history as you move, so the building's different lives make sense. Comfortable shoes matter here. The castle is a climb, but it's built for walking and the payoff is real.
