The experience

The drive from Orosei takes you off-road into the valley where the path begins. You wade the Flumineddu river to enter a woodland of holm oaks and Mediterranean scrub, then walk along the cliffs of Mount Oddeu. Within two hours you reach the canyon entrance, where the rocky walls rise more than 400 meters above the river bed: Su Gorropu is one of the deepest canyons in Europe. The guide points out the unique microclimate that allowed giant Phyllirea and ancient yew trees to grow here, and the endemic Aquilegia di Gorropu grass, found only in this canyon.

As the path becomes rougher, you use your hands to move through boulders. The hike ends when the canyon walls close in and the route becomes impassable, then you retrace your steps back down. Along the way you may spot a golden eagle overhead or hear a Sardinian deer call in the distance. Mouflons (the wild sheep that symbolize the island's rugged character) sometimes appear in quieter moments. The guide shares stories about the geology and legends tied to this ancient land.
