The Experience

You're driving up into the Supramonte on a 4x4, winding through green hills that don't look like they're leading anywhere in particular. The road gets narrower. Then you stop, and the real walk begins — downhill through rocks and scrub, your guide pointing out where the canyon opens up ahead. By the time you reach the riverbed, you've already left the noise behind. The canyon in Rio Pitrisconi is narrow enough that the light changes as you move through it, and the water — actually emerald, not a marketing word — sits in pools between the rock walls.

The canyoning itself is the kind of thing that sounds scarier than it feels once you're rigged up. You abseil down next to waterfalls, the rope anchored and your guide watching the whole way. Then you're in the water, diving into pools that are deep enough and cold enough to wake you up completely. There are rock slides — actual toboggan runs carved into the stone by centuries of water — that you slide down into the next pool. The stretches between are water trekking, which is just walking and swimming through the canyon floor, scrambling over boulders, moving at whatever pace the group can manage. It's not a race. Your guide has done this hundreds of times and knows where the footholds are.

The whole thing takes a few hours, and by the end you're tired in the way that makes sense — muscles worked, adrenaline spent, completely present the whole time.
