Canyoning in Sardinia: Bau Mela with guide and gear
Navigate canyons, rappel cliffs and swim through pristine gorges
Canyoning in Bau Mela is a guided adventure through Sardinia's remote canyon system where you climb rock faces, rappel down waterfalls and swim through natural pools using ropes, harnesses and single-rope techniques. The route suits families and beginners but scales up to serious challenges. A professional Italian-speaking guide leads groups of eight or fewer, and all technical gear including wetsuits, helmets and harnesses is provided. Children from age 8 are welcome.

The experience
The canyon itself is the route. You move through Bau Mela using a mix of techniques (single rope work, climbing, and optional zip line) to descend sections that would otherwise be impassable. Where the drop is too steep to rappel safely, you jump or wade into the pools below and swim to the next section. The guide reads the water level and the group's energy and picks the line that keeps momentum going without grinding to a halt. Three hours means you cover real distance through the gorge, not a single waterfall with a long wait in between.
Technical material is the whole setup: wetsuit, helmet, harness, ropes and boots all come with you. The guide handles the anchor points and checks every connection before you move. Insurance is included. You don't need climbing experience or even to be comfortable on rock: the guide scales the challenge to the group, and if you're not ready for a particular move, there's always the pool route instead. Families book this regularly. The youngest climbers are eight.

Is this one for you?The three-hour pace means real climbing and swimming, not a short waterfall stop. Book this if you want to move through the canyon rather than stand in one spot. The guide scales the difficulty at each obstacle, so families and beginners fit the same route as climbers looking for a challenge.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (8 to 12 years). Children under 8 can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the difference between the beginner and challenge versions of this canyoning route?
The route itself doesn't split into two tracks. Instead, the guide offers choices at each obstacle. Beginners and families can swim through pools or take easier lines around steep sections, while climbers who want it can tackle the rappels and single-rope descents. The same canyon works for both because the water and the pools are always there as an alternative.
Do I need climbing or canyoning experience to book this?
No. The guide creates this adventure for families and beginners, and physical fitness across a wide range works fine. You learn the techniques (single rope, climbing basics, how to rappel) as you go, and the guide is with you the whole time.
What happens if I don't want to use the zip line or rappel down a section?
The zip line is never mandatory, and neither is any single technique. If you'd rather swim or take a different line down, the guide shows you that option. The canyon has multiple ways through it.
