You travel south from Rome in a private coach with Wi-Fi, then either cruise the Amalfi Coast by ferry or drive to Sorrento by land—both routes include time in Positano and a limoncello tasting at a local producer. Free time in Amalfi or Sorrento lets you eat, explore, or swim. You return to Rome by 9pm the same day, with all transport and the guide included in the price.
You leave Rome at dawn and by mid-morning you're standing on a ferry watching the Amalfi Coast rise up in front of you—the kind of vertical cliffs and stacked pastel villages that make you understand why people spend weeks here and never leave. The day trip from Rome to Amalfi & Positano moves fast, but not rushed. You depart from Piazza del Popolo in an air-conditioned coach with Wi-Fi, and the drive south takes you out of the city noise and into the kind of landscape that stops conversation. The guide—English or Spanish-speaking—fills in the history as you go, but mostly you're watching the light change on the water.
There are two ways to do this: with the coastal cruise or without it. If you pick the cruise option, you board a ferry in Salerno and float toward Positano and Amalfi from the sea, which is the only way to really see why the cliffs matter. You get time in Positano first—a town that looks like someone stacked a paint box vertically and called it architecture—to walk the winding streets, find a café, or just sit on the beach and take pictures that won't do it justice. Then the ferry takes you to Amalfi, where you have free time to wander the historic center, visit the cathedral if you want, or stop at a local limoncello producer for a tasting. The limoncello is sharp and sweet at once, and tastes like the lemons growing on the cliffs you just sailed past.
If you skip the cruise and go the land route instead, you still see Positano, but then the coach takes you to Sorrento—a different town, perched above the Bay of Naples, with two hours to explore the historic center and eat something proper. Either way, you're back in the coach by late afternoon, heading north toward Rome. The return is long—you won't see Piazza del Popolo until between 8:30 and 9pm—but the coach is comfortable and you've already spent the day looking at water, so the ride back feels like the exhale after holding your breath.
The whole thing is fixed: transport, the guide, the ferry tickets if you book the cruise option, and the limoncello stop. You don't arrange any of it once you're there. Comfort stops happen along the way, though there are no restrooms on the boat itself, so plan for that. Weather can shift things—if the sea gets rough, the ferry cancels and you get an alternative tour or your money back—but that's the only real variable. You leave Rome in the morning and come back the same night, which means you get the Amalfi Coast without losing a second day to travel.
