The experience

We were still laughing about missing our first espresso when the train rolled out of Rome Termini: honestly, 7am felt brutal but the promise of Capri kept us awake. The tickets had landed in my inbox the night before (nice touch), so we just showed up and found our seats. I remember watching the city blur into fields, then suddenly Naples. Our driver was already waiting. He waved a little sign with my name, which always feels weirdly official.

The drive to Sorrento’s port was quick but winding. I caught a whiff of lemons through the window (or maybe that was just in my head). Our captain, Paolo, greeted us at the dock. We had snacks and cold drinks on board (I grabbed a Peroni), then floated past Punta Carena lighthouse while someone played old Italian songs from their phone, not exactly traditional but it fit somehow.

We got three hours or so on Capri itself. Just enough time to wander through Piazzetta di Capri and lose track of each other among crowds and perfume shops. I bought a lemon granita that melted instantly in my hand. Still worth it. When it was time to meet back at the port for Naples and our return train to Rome, I realized I’d barely checked my phone all day. That view from the boat, cliffs dropping straight into blue water, I still think about that sometimes.
