The Experience

It started with Giulia at the gate, who checked our names off the list and gave a little nod that felt almost conspiratorial — like we were about to be let in on a secret. Inside the Borghese Gallery, it was quieter than I expected for Rome. You could actually hear your own footsteps echoing on the marble. Our guide, Marco, grinned as he led us to Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne. He asked if we saw the leaves turning from marble into something softer — I swear I almost did. The light came in sideways through those big windows and caught bits of gold leaf everywhere.

I kept losing track of time staring at Caravaggio’s St. Jerome (the reds are deeper than I thought possible), but Marco would gently herd us along with stories about Cardinal Borghese himself — apparently both genius collector and total control freak. There was one moment where he described Canova’s Pauline Bonaparte lounging like she owned the place (she probably did), and an older woman in our group snorted out loud. Made everyone laugh, even Marco.

Afterwards we wandered out into the Borghese Gardens, which felt like exhaling after all that art. The air smelled faintly of pine needles and cut grass; you could hear kids somewhere playing soccer but not see them. Locals strolled past with their dogs, totally unfazed by all these masterpieces just meters away. I sat for a minute on a stone bench and tried to say “grazie” properly when a gardener nodded hello — probably butchered it, but he smiled anyway. I still think about that hush inside the gallery, how it followed me out under the trees.
