The Experience

The tour moves between four buildings, each one a UNESCO World Heritage Site, each one built within a century of the others during Late Antiquity when Ravenna was the capital of the Western Roman Empire. The Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo opens with 6th-century mosaics of biblical scenes and saints lining the walls. The Neonian Baptistery, built a century earlier, is an octagonal structure with a dome mosaic of the baptism of Jesus: one of the oldest monuments in the city. The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia is small and cross-shaped, its interior covered in mosaics of starry skies and Christian symbols. The Basilica of San Vitale, the largest of the four, has an octagonal design and mosaics of Emperor Justinian and Empress Theodora. Each building shows a different moment in how early Christian art developed.

The tour runs two to three hours. You pay monument admission at each site as you arrive. The guide does not collect fees, and no combo ticket is included. The guide speaks English or Italian. Ravenna's center is compact and walkable, with public transportation nearby if you need it.
