The experience

Truffles hide in specific soil and root systems, and finding them requires knowing where to look and what the dog is trained to detect. You spend the morning in Tuscany's forests with a guide who teaches you the secrets of truffle habitat: the soil conditions, the trees, the signs that signal a truffle beneath the ground. The dog does the actual work of locating and digging. Your job is to watch, learn and help extract what the dog has found. Black truffles are available most of the year. White truffles, the celebrated variety, come into season in October.

The hunt itself takes four hours, and private transportation is included in the standard booking option. You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with your guide and the dog, moving between promising forest sites. If you prefer to arrange your own transport, a no-pickup option is available at checkout. The guide speaks English, Spanish or Italian depending on your choice at booking.

At the end of the hunt, you can add a truffle-based lunch with wine tasting for an extra fee: a natural way to taste what you've just spent the morning searching for. Infants and small children can come along. Specialized infant seats and stroller access are available.
