The experience

Your driver picks you up from your hotel, B&B or apartment and drives through the rolling hills of Tuscany to Montepulciano. The town's ancient buildings hide cellars beneath the streets, where you descend to see the gigantic oak barrels that age Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG. A guided tour of the cellar comes with five tastings: Rosso di Montepulciano Doc, Nobile di Montepulciano Docg, Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva Docg, a Super Tuscan, and lunch with homemade pici pasta in meat ragù, pecorino di Pienza, bruschette and typical Tuscan cured meats.

After lunch you drive to Pienza, the town built around pecorino cheese. You walk the ancient city walls and browse the artisan cheese shops, tasting the 'sotto cenere' (under ash) version that has been made here for centuries. Leaving Pienza, the route follows one of Tuscany's most photographed wine roads: cypress-lined rows, rolling vineyards and wheat fields that have appeared in films like Gladiator and Under the Tuscan Sun.

The final stop is a family winery in Montalcino that has produced Brunello for generations. A short lesson on local production precedes five more tastings: Rosso di Montalcino, two Brunello reserves, a Super Tuscan and a Rosé. Brunello di Montalcino comes only from Sangiovese Grosso grapes grown on the slopes around the town, and this winery's cellars show how the wine ages. Your driver returns you to your accommodation at the end of the day.
