A sommelier leads you through the tasting, not the other way around.

A private wine and cheese tasting in Palermo pairs six Sicilian wines with four regional cheeses, cured meats and almond cookies, led by a wine expert guide. You walk about a kilometer through monumental areas of the old city for 30–45 minutes, then settle into a wine bar for the tasting itself, served with proper glassware and cutlery. The experience is built around Sicilian varieties like Nero d'Avola and Catarratto, wines that have gained international recognition over recent decades.

The experience

What makes this different from a standard tasting is the walk itself. You don't start at a table. You start moving through the city with your guide, passing some of Palermo's most interesting monumental sites over about a kilometer. The sommelier points out what matters as you go, so by the time you reach the wine bar, you've already absorbed something of the place. The walk takes 30–45 minutes and covers roughly a kilometer on foot.

Once you're seated in the wine bar, the tasting unfolds in a deliberate order. Five types of Sicilian cheese arrive first, ranging from fresh to aged, alongside two kinds of cured ham and an almond dessert or dark chocolate. Then come six wines: two whites, three reds, and a dessert wine at the end. The sommelier walks you through each pairing, explaining the local varieties and why they matter. Nero d'Avola and Catarratto are the main ones you'll encounter, both representative of what Sicilian winemaking has become in the last few decades. Everything is served with proper glassware and cutlery, not rushed.

The tasting is private, so it's only your group in the room. The guide speaks English or Italian, and the experience is wheelchair accessible throughout. You'll need to be at least 18 to participate, and it's not recommended for pregnant travelers or anyone with cardiovascular concerns.
