The experience

You meet at Tempio Travel, the office on the first floor of the Circumvesuviana station at Pompei Scavi villa dei Misteri, 100 meters from Porta Marina Superiore. The meeting point is 15 minutes before your tour time. Express entrance tickets mean you walk straight past the queue at the gate, a real advantage on busy days, and step into the Archaeological Park without the wait that can stretch an hour or more in summer.

The tour moves through the Forum, the main plaza where political, economic and religious life happened, then into the Macellum (the market for meat and fish) where frescoes still show the food Romans ate in the first century. You see the Forum Baths behind the Temple of Jupiter, with both male and female sections intact, marble basins in the hot room, and original stucco on the ceilings. The House of the Faun, one of the largest aristocratic homes, holds a copy of the Alexander Mosaic (the original is in Naples). Then comes the House of the Vettii, a showcase of Roman art from the first century with rooms of painted walls and an interior garden layout that survives almost complete.

Via dell'Abbondanza, the main street running through the city, connects the Forum to the theaters, the Temple of Isis, and the Amphitheater. Along it you pass a thermopolium (literally a place selling hot food, the fast food of ancient Rome), where takeaway meals were sold from a counter. The guide explains the layout and purpose of each space as you walk, so the city's organization and daily rhythms come into focus. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
