The experience

The skip-the-line tickets get you past the entrance queue and straight into the site. An archaeologist guide leads the tour through the streets and buildings buried by Vesuvius in 79 AD, explaining what you're standing in front of: the bakeries with loaves still in the ovens, the homes with mosaics intact, the amphitheater where thousands once gathered. The guide speaks your language: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French or German, depending on which option you book.

The tour runs 2 hours and covers the main archaeological zones without the Villa dei Misteri or the Antiquarium (those require separate tickets). You move at the pace of the group, stopping where the guide points out details most visitors miss: the grooves worn into stone streets by cart wheels, the political graffiti scratched into walls, the casts of bodies preserved in volcanic ash. The site is suitable for all fitness levels, though you'll be walking on uneven ground and climbing stairs inside buildings.

If your booking includes the tasting experience, you'll sample local wines and food onsite after the tour ends. Service animals are allowed. Dogs up to 10 kg and 40 cm tall can enter if leashed and carried inside buildings. Public transportation stops near the site, so you can reach it without a car.
