The experience

You arrive at Pompeii and walk straight past the entrance line. Your guide leads you through the largest archaeological site in the world, stopping at the Great Theatre with its perfect acoustics, the House of Menander with its frescoes and private garden, the Baths, and the Temple of Isis. The guide explains what each building was, how people lived there, and what the layout tells you about daily life two thousand years ago.

From Pompeii you move to Oplontis, a smaller site built as a summer retreat for Poppea, wife of the Roman emperor Nero. The guide points out how this residence differs from the city houses you just saw: the scale, the decoration, the rooms arranged for leisure instead of commerce. Then you head to Herculaneum, buried deeper than Pompeii and preserved so completely that wood, cloth and even food remain. Walking through it feels like stepping into a moment frozen in time, and your guide explains why this site survived so differently from the one you started in.

The tour runs eight hours and covers significant ground on foot. You'll need comfortable walking shoes and a moderate level of fitness. The sites are uneven and involve climbing. Children from age five can join if accompanied by an adult. Your guide speaks English, Spanish or Italian, and the commentary is built around the connections between the three places: what made each city unique, what they shared, and what their differences reveal about Roman life.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, Spanish and Italian.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 14 years). Children under 5 can't be included in the booking.

What is the Great Theatre of Pompeii like, and why does the guide mention its acoustics?

The Great Theatre of Pompeii is the main theater of ancient Pompeii, built with engineering that allowed sound to carry perfectly through the stone structure. Your guide explains how the Romans designed it and what that tells you about their understanding of architecture and public gatherings.

How is Herculaneum different from Pompeii if I'm visiting both on the same day?

Herculaneum is smaller than Pompeii but preserved far more completely: wood, textiles and food survived the eruption, not just stone and ash. Your guide explains why the two sites look so different and what each one shows you about Roman daily life that the other does not.

What was Oplontis, and why is it included on this tour?

Oplontis was the summer residence of Poppea, built as a retreat rather than a working city. Including it lets your guide show you how wealthy Romans lived outside the city, and how that lifestyle differed from what you see in Pompeii's shops, theaters and public spaces.

Do I need to be very fit to do this tour, or can I take it at my own pace?

You should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The sites involve walking on uneven ground and climbing, and the tour covers all three locations over eight hours. The pace is set by the group and the guide's stops, not by individual preference.
