The experience

You start at Porta Marina Inferiore, the lower entrance to Pompeii, where your archaeologist guide meets the group. The tour moves through the Forum, the ancient main square, then into the houses and public buildings that survived the 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius. You'll see the House of the Faun, one of Pompeii's largest private residences, the Stabian Baths with their separate men's and women's sections, and the Lupanar, the famous brothel with its explicit frescoes still visible on the walls. The plaster casts (the hollow spaces in the ash where bodies lay) appear throughout the site, and the guide explains what they show about how people died and lived.

After Pompeii, you take a break, then travel to Herculaneum. If you're starting from Pompeii, that's a 30-minute ride on the Circumvesuviana train plus a 10-minute walk. If you're coming from Naples, Sorrento, or Rome, the guide travels with you by minibus. Herculaneum is smaller than Pompeii but far better preserved: the pyroclastic flow that buried it happened so fast that wood, fabric, and even food carbonized in place instead of rotting. You walk through houses with wooden beams still standing, frescoes still bright, and the Central Thermae with its intact bath chambers. The tour ends at the beach, where archaeologists found the remains of over 300 people who sheltered in boat houses when Vesuvius erupted, waiting for rescue that never came.

The headsets mean the guide doesn't have to shout and you don't have to cluster around them to hear. Entry to both sites and the transport between them are included. The only thing you pay for separately is lunch if you want it during the break. What exactly are the plaster casts I'll see at Pompeii?

The plaster casts are hollow spaces in the ash where bodies lay when Vesuvius erupted. Archaeologists poured plaster into the voids to capture the shape of the person. You see their posture, sometimes their clothing folds, and occasionally their facial features. They appear throughout Pompeii and the granary holds several, including a dog and a tree.

How do I get from Pompeii to Herculaneum, and is it included?

If your tour starts at Pompeii, you take the Circumvesuviana train for about 30 minutes, then walk 10 minutes to the entrance. The train ticket is included. If you're starting from Naples, Sorrento, or Rome, the guide travels with you by minibus directly to Herculaneum. Either way, transport is part of the package.

Why is Herculaneum better preserved than Pompeii?

Herculaneum was buried by a pyroclastic flow (a superheated surge of gas and ash) that moved so fast it carbonized wood, textiles, and organic material on the spot instead of letting them decay. You'll see wooden beams, door frames, and even furniture still standing, along with frescoes that kept their color. Pompeii was buried more gradually by falling ash and pumice, so less survived intact.

Will I need to climb stairs or walk on uneven ground?

Both sites involve walking on ancient stone streets and through buildings with uneven floors and occasional steps. The tour is suitable for all fitness levels, but it's not recommended for visitors in wheelchairs or for visually impaired guests unless accompanied by a personal assistant.
