The Experience

Pompeii sits 20 feet under volcanic ash and pumice from the eruption that killed 2,000 of its 20,000 residents. Your guide enters through the Sea Gate and walks you first to the Forum—the main square ringed by temples, porticoes and law courts—then through the streets where everyday life stopped in AD 79 and stayed frozen for 1,700 years. The excavations over the last two centuries have stripped away enough ash to show how people actually lived in this provincial town of the greatest empire the world had known. The Pompeii portion takes about 2 hours.

After Pompeii, you drive to Naples and board a private motorboat for the second half of the day. Baia, once the holiday resort of Roman emperors and the wealthy, now lies submerged in the Gulf of Naples as a protected marine archaeological park. You snorkel directly above and among the ruins—temples, villas, harbors and statuary—that sank into the sea over centuries. The boat is yours alone; the guide is in the water with you.

The day begins and ends at the cruise terminal, so if you are arriving by ship, there is no separate transport to arrange. The driver handles tolls and parking. Entrance fees to Pompeii are not included in the tour price and are paid separately.
