The Experience

You arrive at the diving center and start with a short safety lesson from the instructors—they walk you through the equipment, the procedures in the water, and how to move around the site so you stay comfortable and in control. Everything you need is provided: mask, fins, snorkel, wetsuit if you want one. You bring a swimsuit, a towel and a change of clothes. Once geared up, you board a boat that takes you out to the Archaeological Park of Baia, where the Roman city begins just offshore.

The snorkeling itself lasts about 45 minutes, and you follow one of the marked routes through the park. Your guide stays with you the entire time, pointing out the ancient mosaics, statues, marble floors and the structures of the Roman villas that emperors and senators once owned on the surface above. Because bradyseism—the slow sinking of the earth caused by the Phlegraean Fields' volcanic activity—has brought these buildings down about four meters, the water is clear enough to see everything without diving deep. The marine life that has moved in over the centuries shares the ruins with you, and the guide helps you navigate both the archaeology and the living ecosystem around it.

After you surface and return to the diving center, you have access to showers and changing rooms. Refreshments are usually available. The whole outing runs about two and a half hours from start to finish, which fits easily into an afternoon if you're based in Naples or staying nearby.
