The Experience

"You see that curve? Hold your breath," our driver grinned as we twisted along the Amalfi Drive out of Salerno. I pressed my forehead to the window—just salt wind and those impossible cliffs dropping into blue. We stopped for photos more than once; honestly, you can't not. The air smelled faintly of lemons (or maybe that's just what I wanted it to be), and every village seemed to tumble down the hillside in pastel layers. Our driver, Antonio, pointed out Praiano between jokes about his mother’s cooking—he said she makes limoncello stronger than the local stuff.

Amalfi was already humming when we wandered its narrow streets. It’s busy but not in a bad way—just families chatting over coffee, old men arguing near the cathedral steps. The Duomo di Sant'Andrea looked even grander up close; I tried to count all the mosaic tiles but gave up after about twenty. We had enough free time to get lost (which we did) before heading on toward Positano. That drive is something else—every corner opens up another view that makes you want to stop again. In Positano, I bought a tiny ceramic fish from a woman who wrapped it so carefully you'd think it was gold. Lunch was seafood pasta at a place above the beach; I still remember how sweet the tomatoes tasted.

Pompeii hit differently—there’s this hush when you step through those ancient streets. Our guide met us at the gate and somehow made two thousand years feel like yesterday. She showed us faded frescoes and pointed out grooves in the stone roads where chariots once rolled by (hard to imagine with all the tour groups around). The sun was hot but there were pockets of cool shade inside old villas. It’s strange—walking through someone else’s lost city with your own feet echoing on their stones.
