The experience
You arrive at the entrance of Mazzarosa Winery and collect a picnic basket already packed with everything you need: glasses, placemats, corkscrews, typical Abruzzo cheeses and cured meats, bread, seasonal fruit, snacks, water and a bottle of wine for every two people, chosen from their Trebbiano, Pecorino, Cerasuolo or Montepulciano. From there, you walk easily into the olive groves to find your spot among the trees.
The picnic itself is the point: no schedule, no moving between stops. You sit in the open air on the estate, unpack the basket and eat at your own pace. When you're ready, you can take a guided tour of the historic cellar, where you'll walk through the barrel cellar and stand in front of one of Europe's largest barrels, holding a thousand hectoliters. The cellar tour is already included, so you choose whether to do it before the picnic, after, or skip it altogether.
The whole experience runs two hours. A live guide speaks English or Italian, depending on the group. Bring nothing except yourself. The winery handles the food, the wine, the glasses and the setup.
