The experience
Mazzarosa Winery sits in a nature reserve in Abruzzo and has been making wine and oil for 150 years. The building itself, designed by Senator Devincenzi, is architecturally rare: only one other winery in Italy, located in Sicily, shares its design. You start with a brief walk through the vineyards and olive groves, then move into the cellar and barrel room, where the staff explains how the wines age and points out the 1,000-hectoliter barrel, one of the largest in Europe.
The tasting centers on five wines chosen to represent Abruzzo tradition with an eye toward innovation. Each is paired with regional food: bruschetta made with the winery's own oil, two types of local cheese, two types of cured meat, and Abruzzo cantuccini cookies paired with Vino Cotto, the region's signature sweet wine. The wines are produced under SQNPI certification, a standard for sustainable quality.
A live guide leads the tour in English or Italian. The whole experience takes two hours and is private, so the pace and focus stay with your group.
