The experience
The concrete tanks built underground at this winery are what set it apart in Abruzzo. You'll start with a short walk through the vineyards (weather permitting) and hear the story of how the operation grew, then move into the tasting room, called Sala delle Vigne, where three wines from Terra dei Vestini, one of the most prestigious sub-areas of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC, are poured alongside bread and organic oil made on the property. A platter of local cured meats and cheeses rounds out the tasting.
The location itself is the draw. Catignano sits about 30 minutes from Pescara, surrounded by vineyards with views across to Gran Sasso, Majella and the sea. You linger in the tasting room with relaxing music, no rush to leave, and the atmosphere changes with the season: the vines look different in winter than they do in summer, and the light shifts with it.
