The experience

You start on a bike in the heart of Palermo's old town and follow a route that strings together the landmarks most visitors miss on foot. The guide takes you past Piazza Pretoria and its monumental fountain, through the Four Corners (the octagonal square where the city's two main axes cross), and into Ballarò, one of the city's oldest markets: the kind of place where the noise and the smell tell you more than any plaque. You'll pass the city gate, see the Palatine Chapel from outside, and ride past the Palermo Cathedral and Teatro Massimo, the largest opera house in Italy, both external views that let you move through the city instead of standing in a queue.

The route also takes you to Villa Garibaldi for a moment of quiet in green space, then down to La Cala, the oldest port in Palermo, where the city's link to the sea becomes visible. You'll see Palazzo Valguarnera-Gangi, an eighteenth-century noble palace, and Piazza Castelnuovo, where modern Palermo spreads out between the Politeama Theatre and the waterfront. The Marina Yachting area gives you a view of the whole seafront before the tour wraps up.
