You arrive at Capitan Drake, an elegant wine shop in the center of Como, just a few steps from the old city walls and easy to reach from the train station. A professional sommelier greets you and walks you through a tasting of seven Italian wines, each one chosen to represent different grape varieties, regions and winemaking traditions. As you taste each glass, the sommelier shares the story behind it—where the grapes come from, how the wine was made, what flavors to look for. You learn to notice the differences between wines, what makes one region's style distinct from another.

Between tastings, you eat Italian gastronomic specialties paired to complement each wine: cured meat, cheese with compote, porcini, anchovies, buffalo mozzarella.
