The experience

The boat leaves Sorrento and hugs the Sorrentine coastline for about an hour, passing Roman villa ruins and fishing villages before crossing open water with Mount Vesuvius visible on the horizon and the tuff cliffs rising behind you. As Ischia comes into view, the Aragonese Castle appears first: a fortress rising from the sea that has stood for centuries and marks the start of the island proper. The captain steers past San Pietro Beach, where cafés line the shore, and into San Montano Bay, a sheltered crescent where the water turns shallow and clear.

The route circles the island's western edge, passing Punta Imperatore's dramatic headland and arriving at Sorgeto, where the tour's defining moment happens: warm mineral springs bubble directly from underwater rocks, and you can wade in and float in water heated by geothermal activity while the open sea surrounds you. From there, Sant'Angelo appears: a village of pastel houses that seem to sit on the water itself, their reflections unbroken in the bay. The boat continues to Cartaromana Bay, where you can swim again and eat lunch if you choose, before heading back toward Sorrento as the afternoon light catches the cliffs and colored buildings of the coast.

You travel aboard one of four private boats in the fleet, each carrying a different number of passengers. The captain speaks English and Italian throughout the day. Pickup happens from a designated meeting point in Sorrento, and the return follows the same route. Towels, snacks, water, soft drinks, beer, Prosecco and Limoncello travel with you.
