Step into a real Milan home for an evening of cooking, eating, and laughter. You’ll watch family recipes come to life, share stories over wine, and taste what makes Milanese food special—right where it’s made best.
You know you’re in for something different the moment you buzz up to the apartment—there’s that faint aroma of simmering sauce drifting down the stairwell. Our host, Lucia, greeted us with a big smile and a quick wave of her wooden spoon. Shoes off at the door (she insisted), and we stepped right into her cozy kitchen where the table was already set with mismatched plates and a carafe of local red wine breathing on the counter.
Lucia started by showing us how she preps her favorite risotto—she swears by Carnaroli rice and always adds just a pinch more butter than any recipe calls for. We watched, glasses in hand, as she stirred and chatted about her grandmother’s tricks for getting that creamy texture just right. The kitchen filled up with the scent of sage and onions sizzling away. At one point, her neighbor popped in to borrow some sugar, which made it all feel even more like an ordinary Milanese evening.
The meal itself was simple but so good: a seasonal starter (ours was thinly sliced zucchini with lemon), then that risotto—rich, earthy, perfect—and finally a crumbly sbrisolona cake dusted with powdered sugar. Between courses, Lucia poured us another splash of wine from Lombardia and told stories about growing up in this very neighborhood. It was relaxed, unhurried; nobody checked their phone or rushed off anywhere. By the time coffee came out (strong enough to keep you talking all night), I felt like I’d known everyone at the table for years.
