Paddle past rocky cliffs to a wild beach, swim in hidden coves, return by afternoon

A canoe excursion on the Island of Elba that departs from Club del Mare and paddles to the wild beach of Fonza with two swimming stops along the way. The guide leads in English or Italian and provides all paddling gear, life jackets and a waterproof bag. Children from age one are welcome, and the trip takes around two and a half hours. Bring your own snacks and water, as there are no bars or restaurants at Fonza.

Step-by-step itinerary

Canoe excursion to wild beaches

  • Briefing at Club del Mare
  • Depart for coves and rocky cliffs
  • Swim stop at Caletta di Ischia
  • Long break at Fonza beach
  • Return to Club del Mare

The experience

The paddle starts at Club del Mare with a brief safety briefing, then heads out among rocky cliffs and hidden coves toward the Island of Elba's quieter corners. You'll make a short swim stop at the Caletta di Ischia cove, then continue to Fonza, the wild beach where you'll spend a longer break to recover and take in the views. From the water you see the nearby islands of Giglio, Montecristo, Pianosa and Corsica across the sea.

Everything needed to paddle safely is provided: canoe, paddle, life jacket and a waterproof bag to keep your belongings dry. The guide handles the route and timing, so you focus on paddling and swimming. The whole outing runs about two and a half hours from start to return. Because there are no facilities at Fonza, pack snacks and water before you leave the marina.

Weather and sea conditions can shift the destination: if conditions don't favor Fonza on the day you go, the guide may take the group to Galenzana instead, another beach stop the operator runs. English-language guides are not available on Saturdays and Sundays, so book an Italian-language departure if those are your only options.
