The experience

The guide picks the trails based on how you ride. If you're comfortable on steep terrain, you'll climb Cima del Monte (the highest peak on this side of the island), and get a full-circle view before dropping into the Buca del Bandito, a trail built for adrenaline. If you prefer a steadier pace, the route stays on the same landscape but with gentler lines. Either way, you pass through the Red Lake, a mineral-stained basin inside the old mining park at Rio where iron and earth turn the water rust-colored after rain.

The tour also crosses Monte Calendozio, where you look out over the Bay of Cavo toward the mainland, then rides through dunes that feel like another planet. The mining land has been left as a natural skill park with surreal rock formations. A farmhouse stop near the coast, just 400 meters from the sea, offers a chance to rest and grab a drink. The whole loop takes four hours and covers the east side's best terrain.

You'll need a moderate level of fitness and comfort on a bike. The e-motor helps on climbs but doesn't flatten the technical sections. The guide speaks English, Spanish or Italian, and pickup from your accommodation is included in the price.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English, Spanish and Italian.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What does the Red Lake look like, and why is it that color?

The Red Lake sits inside Rio's old mining park and gets its rust-red color from minerals and iron-rich earth in the basin, which intensifies after rain. It's a stop on the route where the landscape shifts from coastal trails to the island's mining heritage.

How steep are the trails, and can I choose an easier version?

The guide adjusts both the route and the intensity based on your riding skills before you start, so you can ride the technical Buca del Bandito descent if you're confident, or take a gentler line through the same area if you prefer. Either way, you cover the same landmarks.

What's included in the tour price?

Pickup from your accommodation, the guided ride with a live guide in your language, basic mechanical assistance if needed, and access to all the trails and stops are included. Lunch is not included, but there's a farmhouse stop where you can buy a drink.

How long is the actual riding time, and how much time do we spend stopped?

The tour runs four hours total. That includes climbing time, the technical descents, stops at Cima del Monte for the view, the Red Lake, Monte Calendozio, and the farmhouse, so you're moving and stopping throughout rather than riding flat-out.
