The Experience

“You see that line of blue? That’s where the sea gets serious,” our captain said, pointing ahead as we left Marsala’s marina. I was still finishing my coffee — they handed out croissants and espresso right after we boarded, which felt oddly fancy for 9 am on a boat. The air smelled like salt and sunscreen already. There were families with kids, a couple from Palermo chatting softly, and us — all squinting at the way the sunlight bounced off the water.

The first stop was Cala Azzurra or maybe Cala Rossa (I lost track — they’re both that kind of turquoise you only see in postcards). Our guide tossed me a snorkel mask and grinned when I hesitated about the water temperature. It was brisk but not shocking, and under the surface I could hear my own breathing mixed with distant laughter from the deck. I kept drifting, half-watching little silver fish dart around rocks. Not sure how long we stayed — time sort of wobbles when you’re floating like that.

Later we docked at Favignana’s port. The island had this lazy midday rhythm: old men playing cards in the shade, scooters buzzing past little shops selling granita. We wandered for an hour before heading back to the boat for lunch — trays of caponata, seafood salad, sun-dried tomatoes that tasted like pure summer. Someone popped open a bottle of local prosecco and suddenly everyone was talking more loudly, even trying out bits of Italian (badly). I think that’s when it hit me how much food is part of Sicily’s soul.

After lunch came Levanzo — just a slow pass by its tiny fishing village before another swim at Cala Fredda or maybe Minnola (the names blur together but the feeling doesn’t). By late afternoon my skin felt salty and tired in a good way. On the way back to Marsala, I stood at the rail watching Favignana fade into that big blue haze. Sometimes you don’t realize what you needed until you’re halfway home — I still think about that view.
