The experience
The tour starts in Pastrengo, a small town on the hills above Lake Garda known for the 1848 Battle of Pastrengo fought between Piedmontese and Austrian armies. You'll ride on safe roads and cycle paths through the countryside, passing through Calmasino (a village near Bardolino where dirt roads wind through vineyards and green landscapes), and approaching Lazise, a town on the lake coast that was granted fortification rights by the Holy Roman Emperor Otto I in 983 and is considered Italy's oldest comune. Throughout the ride, you'll see the Austrian forts that dot the hills. One of them, completed in 1861, now functions as a relais and event venue.
After cycling, you'll stop at the Austrian fort for the tasting. Three local wines are served alongside quality food, and the fort's position offers a view of the lake. Water is provided during the ride, and the guide (fluent in English or Italian) leads the whole experience. E-bikes and helmets are included, so you don't need to bring your own. The e-bikes make the hills manageable without requiring high fitness. Arrive 15 minutes early, and wear comfortable, sporty clothing: no skirts, slippers or sandals.
