Breathe underwater and swim weightless among fish and seabed in four hours

Baptism of the Sea is a beginner scuba diving class on the Island of Elba where you learn the basics from certified instructors, then dive to sites chosen for safety and marine life. All equipment is provided. The dinghy departs from near Mokambo restaurant and takes you to locations like Isola dei Topi, Palmaiola, Cala Mandriola or Scoglio di Ortano depending on weather and conditions. Small groups keep the attention on each diver.

The experience

The wetsuit, tank and mask arrive fitted and ready. A certified instructor walks you through the basics on land, then you board a dinghy that motors out to one of four dive sites around Elba: each chosen because the water stays clear, the seabed holds something to see, and the depth suits a first dive. You descend slowly, breathing through the regulator, and the instructor stays close. The sites rotate based on wind and swell, so the operator picks the safest water on the day you go.

What you encounter depends on the site and the season, but the waters around Elba hold schools of colored fish, rocky formations and the kind of seabed detail that makes a beginner realize why people come back to diving. The experience lasts half a day total, with time for the briefing, the boat ride out, the dive itself and the return. You need to know how to swim, but no prior diving experience is required. The instructor's job is to keep you comfortable and safe at every step.

Guides speak English, Italian or French. Public transport runs near the meeting point if you're staying elsewhere on the island.
