Diving in Baia Submerged Park: Roman ruins underwater
Mosaics and marble statues preserved underwater, a thousand meters from Naples
Double dive in Baia Submerged Park near Naples for certified divers, with instructor, gear and four hours total. You'll explore submerged Roman sites like the Nymphaeum of Claudius and Villa dei Pisoni, seeing mosaics, columns and marble statues at depths between 5 and 10 meters. Depending on conditions, you may visit multiple archaeological zones in a single outing.
The experience
What lies on the seafloor off Baia, just kilometers from Naples, is an underwater Pompeii: Roman villas, thermal baths and temples preserved in the blue. You arrive at the Subaia hub at the Port of Baia, where an instructor walks you through the basics of scuba diving before you gear up with tank, mask, fins, BCD, regulator and weights. A five-minute boat ride takes you to the dive site, and then you're down among the ruins.
The sites you explore depend on the day's visibility and sea conditions. You might see the Submerged Nymphaeum of Claudius, Villa a Protiro, the Thermals of the Lacus, or Villa dei Pisoni: each one scattered with remarkably preserved mosaics, columns and marble fragments. You dive alongside your instructor at depths between 5 and 10 meters, moving through water that shifts between shades of blue as you descend. The whole outing takes about four hours from arrival to departure.
You'll have a locker for your belongings, bottled water on hand, and all the diving equipment provided. The hub is accessible by public transportation if you're coming from elsewhere in the Naples area.
